Crackdown on vehicles without number plates

LAHORE: A crackdown on plying vehicles without number plates or using counterfeit number plates has been launched by the Excise and Taxation Department.

Addressing a meeting with the Excise and Taxation director general and the CCPO, SMU’s Salman Sufi said under the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, no unregistered vehicle was allowed on the roads.

“If a vehicle with an ‘applied for’ plate is found on the road, its driver will be fined and the vehicle impounded,” he said.

He said such vehicles posed a security risk as they were untraceable.

“Owners of vehicles with fake license plates will be prosecuted,” he said. He said the crackdown in Lahore was being conducted by the Excise and Taxation Department and the CCPO’s office. He said its progress would be monitored by the SMU. He said the SMU would also launch a Dealer Vehicle Registration System (DVRS) with the Excise and Taxation Department in other cities of the province.

“Through this system, vehicle registration and issuance of license plates would be done during the transaction,” he said.

“No vehicle will be allowed to leave the dealership premises without being registered first,” he said.
