MULTAN: A six-month long training programme by the Youth Skill Development Programme for women, interested in setting up small-scale businesses and cottage industry, began in Dera Ghazi Khan district on Tuesday.

Under the programme, the participants will be given interest-free loans amounting to Rs0.25 million. “We want them to launch successful small scale start-ups,” MPA Syed Abdul Aleem Shah said at the inauguration of the training at Sanatzar, Dera Ghazi Khan.

The objective of the programme is to enhance women’s skills and hone their business acumen, he said. “No country can progress if half of its population is sidelined,” he added.

After they complete the training programme, the participants will be have mastered specific skills which could help them start their own businesses and earn a respectable livelihood, the MPA said.

Sanatzar Manager Farooq Ahmad said the participants would be admitted to the six-month training programme, which includes diplomas in Information Technology, dress making and beautician training.

He said a Rs3,000 monthly stipend would be given to the participants who ensure 90 per cent attendance in the training programme. Shields would be given after they complete the course, he said.

Ahmad said strict merit had been observed in the admissions round. He said 25 candidates had been given admission in each course after an interview.  “We will soon launch mobile phone repairing courses for women in Dera Ghazi Khan,” Shah said. Shah added that the China Pakistan Economic Corridor would open a window of development for Dera Ghazi Khan. The district has been included in the main phase of CPEC, he added. Work on the Multan-Dera Ghazi Khan Road would be initiated in next month, Shah said. Chinese language courses will be introduced soon, he said.  Shah visited the classes and spoke to the students. He told the authorities to provide them dress making machines and computers on priority.
