Sunday Bazaar: Prices of most vegetables report upward trend

Shoppers express their satisfaction with arrangements

LAHORE: Scores of shoppers were seen at Sunday Bazaars across the city ahead of the start of the holy month of Ramazan.

Prices of most seasonal vegetables recorded an upward trend compared to the last week.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, a shopper, Muhammad Salman, said arrangements made by the district administration were appreciable. He expressed his satisfaction over quality and availability of most seasonal commodities. Other shoppers said the government should ensure similar arrangements at the weekly Sunday markets throughout the year.

According to the price list issued by the Lahore Market Committee, prices of radish and desi round gourd (tinday) increased by 43 per cent as radish was sold for Rs8 to Rs10 and round gourd for Rs50 per kg. Methi price increased by 41 per cent. It was sold for Rs48 to Rs52 per kg.

Spinach prices rose by 38 per cent and it was sold for Rs16 to Rs18 per kg. The price of capsicum increased by 33 per cent and it was sold for Rs37 to Rs40 per kg; desi cucumber by 25 per cent it was sold for Rs37 to Rs40 per kg, while famed cucumber by 21 per cent and it was sold for Rs15 to Rs17 per kg, bringle by 21 per cent and it was sold for Rs31 to Rs35 per kg, cabbage by 20 per cent and it was sold for Rs16 to Rs18 per kg, onions and tomatoes each by 18 per cent and they were sold for Rs23 to Rs26 and for Rs11 to Rs13 per kg, respectively, potato by 13 per cent and it sold for Rs23 to Rs26 per kg (a different potato variety was sold for Rs17 to Rs19 per kg), taro roots (arvi) by 10 per cent and it was sold for Rs69 to Rs75 per kg, bottle gourd (ghiya kaddu) by 10 per cent and it was sold for Rs21 to Rs23 per kg, and sponge gourd (ghiya tori) by nine per cent and it was sold for Rs34 to Rs38 per kg. No change was reported in the prices of ginger (Chinese and Thai varieties), bitter gourd, desi green chili and pumpkin.

Ramazan Bazaars

The price notification issued for the Ramazan Bazaars showed that price of a 10-kg bag of wheat flour was set at Rs290 per bag. The price of vegetable ghee and cooking oil was reduced by Rs10 per kg.

The minimum price for new super basmati rice was set between Rs70 per kg and for old super basmati rice at Rs82 per kg in the open market and Rs80 per kg at the Ramazan Bazaars. Prices of big and small gram pulses were set at Rs122 and Rs128 per kg, respectively; of small and big lentil at Rs146 and Rs138 per kg, respectively; of washed mash and moong at Rs244 and Rs130 per kg, respectively; of black gram between Rs110 and Rs120 per kg; gram flour at Rs135 per kg at Ramazan Bazaars and at Rs140 per kg in open markets.

The price of red chili (kunri) was set at Rs240 per kg, of white sugar at Rs55 per kg and mutton at Rs660 and beef at Rs280 per kg.
