CPNE resolution: ‘Karachi will turn into Beirut if we’re not careful’

KARACHI: Unless we do something, in the next five years the violence in Karachi will be worse than what existed in Beirut. “We don’t have much time,” said South Asia Free Media Association General Secretary Imtiaz Alam.

He was one of the many speakers at the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) all parties conference on Saturday attended by representatives of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Awami National Party, Karachi Union of Journalists and the police who condemned the spate of violence in the city.

The civil society, political and social organisations supported the resolution passed by CPNE for a violence-free Pakistan. The resolution declared that the loss of lives is a tragedy that cannot be measured.
