Restriction: Plea for broader access to YouTube

LAHORE:

A petition was filed in the Lahore Registry of Supreme Court on Monday, seeking directions for access to global version of the YouTube website in Pakistan. Barrister Zafarullah has filed the petition, stating that in January 2016, access to YouTube was restored in Pakistan. “However, only a localised version of the website is available in Pakistan. One cannot access some of the material available to the rest of the world,” he said. He requested the court to issue directions to the Ministry of Information Technology to ensure the provision of global version of YouTube website in the country. The video-sharing website was banned in Pakistan in 2012 after country-wide outcry over a blasphemous video.
