KARACHI: In a bid to expand the industrial base and provide it with a cheaper energy resource, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has urged the minister of petroleum to issue a notification for the removal of moratorium on new gas connections to industries in the country.

With the import of liquefied natural gas and removal of other bottlenecks, gas availability in Punjab had increased, which partially improved industrial activity, a press release quoted Aptma Chairman Tariq Saud as saying. He called non-payment of Rs200 billion in outstanding refunds pertaining to sales tax, income tax, rebates and previous policy initiatives a major stumbling block to a smooth running of the industry.

He urged the government to release sales tax refunds so that they could be put to use for running industrial units.
