The scheduled weekly power outage at Mayo Hospital due to construction work for the Orange Line Metro Train project has been shifted from Wednesday to Sunday, Health Department spokesman Akhlaq Ali Khan said on Sunday.
Power supply to the hospital remained suspended from 7am to 1.30pm on Sunday. However, doctors on duty told The Express Tribune that the suspension did not affect hospital operations because no surgeries were scheduled on Sundays. They said backup power from 16 electricity generators installed at the healthcare facility was enough to let them continue routine operations at the emergency wards.
The doctors welcomed the government’s move to shift the weekly suspension of power to Sundays. He said backup power supply facilities at the hospital were not adequate to let them take care of all surgeries scheduled for Wednesdays. “Sometimes, we had to conduct surgeries under torch light,” he said.
