The annual book fair at Punjab University (PU) concluded on Saturday. As manyas 184,882 books were sold during the three-day fair, compared to 167,000books last year.


“The large number of books sold at the fair leads us to believe that the habit of reading books can be promoted if books are offered atdiscountedrates,” Vice ChancellorMujahidKamran said in a statement. He praised the efforts of the book fair managementcommittees and security officials whohad organised the event. School Education Minister Rana Mashhood, MNA Pervaiz Malik, MPAs WaheedAlam andKhwaja Imran Nazir, former education minister Mian Imran Masood andjournalist SohailWarraich visited the fair. Mashhood said that he was happy to see that people had attended the fair in large numbers.


MPA MajidZahoor;Leader of Opposition in the Provincial Assembly MehmoodurRashid; journalists Hassan Nisar, AtaurRehman, FarrukhSohailGoindi and Salman Abid had visited the fair on the second day on Saturday.


The vice chancellor requested thegovernment to subsidise books in order to promote reading. Hesaid advancements in technology had not affected the importance of books. Citing statistics, he said the number of books being printed had increased worldwide.


Prof MujahidMansoori said,“Books play a key role in the formation of a complete society.”
