Six experienced players have been omitted by the committee including Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik, Danish Kaneria and Yousuf. But last year’s top-scorer Usman Salahuddin finds his way in the list, having scored 927 in as many as nine first-class matches.
The Express Tribune has learnt that the names have been recommended strictly on the basis of a four-point policy employed by the selection committee that takes into consideration the player’s future prospects, fitness, performance and discipline. The committee, headed by chief selector Mohsin Khan, wants to ensure that they pick the best young talent from the domestic circuit.
Malik and Kaneria were not considered as the players are still waiting clearance by the PCB’s Integrity Committee. Yousuf’s contract is still under question and will be decided by the board’s chairman Ijaz Butt, who is currently in New Zealand to determine the captain for the World Cup. The suspended trio of Salman, Amir and Asif will only be considered once a verdict on their spot fixing case was reached.
The players’ contracts will be effective for one year starting from January 1, 2011. It has also been learnt that the special stipend category which was introduced last year will be retained to serve as a back-up pool.
