Home accessories designer, Maira Chinoy, invites us over to her airy apartment and gives a few tips on how to make your space your own

Living in an apartment is fun and convenient at the same time and is an option young couples have started going for to start out their new lives together. This week, Maira Chinoy welcomes us into her lovely apartment in Lahore and shows us how to decorate an open-plan apartment lounge.

“My husband and I moved here after we got married, and it has been a lot of fun setting this place up,” says Chinoy. “Apartment living is convenient and the best part is that the space belongs to us. The staff is not a constant part of this world we have created — and we love it.”

Clean lines and contemporary furniture pieces, accented with accessories, create the perfect ambience for this comfortable yet chic apartment. “I have a super-eclectic taste when it comes to interiors. I like ‘contemporary classic’ with that punch of quirky accessories and pops of colour.” What’s great about the way the space has been set up is that despite being an intimate space, it is airy with ample seating and open space.

The use of light colours and vibrant paintings on the walls add a youthful, fun vibe to the space. “I love this space the most because each piece has a story behind it and was acquired during my travels,” she continues. “Most of the accessories you see have been made by me but some of the artwork is from my travels to Sri Lanka and Cuba.”

The most unique piece of art in the room is Wahab Jaffer’s doodles on Chinoy’s wedding card. “I had designed my wedding card myself, but then a few months after the wedding I got a package from Wahab Jaffer and he had doodled on my cards, immortalising them and making them so special.”

We also spot a Mansoor Aye that was gifted to Chinoy by her parents on her 21st birthday along with a beautiful Unver Shafi that the artist presented to the couple on their wedding. While we go through the space, we see an adorable cushion with a hippopotamus lazing on it. “I picked this up in South Africa recently and am absolutely in love with it.”
