Murder most foul: Acid attack, murder attempts and killings reported across the province

MULTAN/ DERA GHAZI KHAN/FAISALABAD: Several cases of murder and murder attempts, including an acid attack, were reported in districts across the province on Saturday and Sunday.

In Dera Ghazi Khan, a man was arrested on Sunday on charges of killing his seven-month pregnant wife after she refused to let him contract a second marriage.

Police said the woman’s brother Sabir Hussain filed a complaint with the Gadai police accusing Javaid Hussain, his sister’s husband, of murdering her. He said Javaid Hussain, a resident of Gadai Sharqi, had had an argument with his wife Rasheed Bibi after he told her that he wanted to marry another woman.

He said that Rasheed Bibi had refused to give him permission to take a second wife and Javaid Hussain picked up a club and hit her with it several times till she died. Sabir Hussain said that his sister had been seven-months pregnant at that time.

Police said they were interrogating Javaid Hussain about the charges filed against him.

Mother, children attacked with acid

In Multan, acid was thrown on a woman and her three children who were asleep in the lawn of their house in Shujabad on Saturday night.

Mumtaz Mai, 37, and her children Farzana, 12, Ahsan, 14, and Saba, 19, were asleep when unidentified assailants threw acid on them and fled.

Residents of the area took them to the Shujabad THQ Hospital. Police said Mumtaz Mai and Saba were referred to Nishtar Hospital owing to their critical condition.

Doctors at the Nishter Hospital said the mother and daughter had suffered burns on 30 per cent of their bodies.

Farzana and Ahsan were given first aid and were discharged. Doctors said Mumtaz Mai’s condition was relatively stable but Saba had burns on her back as well and would have to undergo surgery.

Multan City Police Officer Azhar Akram visited Mumtaz Mai’s house to oversee the investigation. He said Mumtaz Mai had refused her nephew 26-year-old Gulfam’s marriage proposal for Saba. “We believe he is behind the attack.” He said they had formed two teams to arrest the culprits.

The police had taken 11 people into custody and had zeroed in on Gulfam. Akram said that they had arrested Gulfam within 12 hours of the attack.

Labourer set ablaze

In Multan, a daily-wage labourer, sleeping on a pavement in Samijabad, was set alight by two unidentified suspects on a motorcycle on Sunday. He was taken to Nishtar Hospital where doctors said his condition was critical.

New Multan police said Kashif, 27, worked at the Sabzi Mandi as a labourer. He was sleeping on the footpath on Saturday night when two men sprinkled petrol on him and set him alight. Then they drove away.

Doctors treating him at Nishtar Hospital said he had suffered burns on 20 per cent of his body.

Three stabbed to death in sleep

In Faisalabad, three men were found murdered on Friday night in front of their shop on Eden Garden Road.

Madina Town police SHO Muhammad Abid said Ghulan Asghar, a resident of Toba Tek Singh; Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Jaranwala; and Muhammad Akram, a resident of Chak 208-RB; were asleep in front of their shop near Bibi Jan Godown Chowk when they were stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

The SHO said they had registered a case on the complaint of Mushtaq’s brother Tahir.

The SHO said the three men were friends. They owned tea stalls, grocery stands and some electrician workshops in the area. Separately in Faisalabad, police said a girl was shot dead by a man whose marriage proposal she had turned down. Police said the culprit was a resident of Gulbahar Colony. In another incident, Shahid Saleem of Chak 116-JB was shot dead allegedly by his nephews. Police said Muhammad Arif of Sammundri was shot dead by some unidentified assailants.
