Kiran Aman, the versatile designer behind Kiran Fine Jewellery and the founder and CEO of Markings, a publishing house based in Pakistan, unlocks her vault for us

How/when did you get interested in jewellery?

I have always accessorised, even in my teenage years I wore a lot of costume jewellery, especially earrings. As I have grown older, I have stopped wearing earrings and now mostly concentrate on rings and pendants.

What is your favourite piece of jewellery and where did you get it?

My favourite piece has to be this ring I wear on the index finger of my right hand. Ever since I made it, I have never taken it off. It was one of the first rings I designed for myself and I feel that somehow it has become a part of who I am, and symbolises my journey by being part of it.

Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why?

There is this piece that my nani wore. I grew up watching her wear it all my life. She told me that as a child I would ask her to give it to me when she passed away. She has passed away now, and it is with me. I don’t wear it, because it is not my style, but for me, it embodies her.

Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces?

I design and create pieces for myself. Sometimes my favourites come from a collection that I work on, as certain pieces just stay with me. I feel it is very difficult as a jewellery designer to like jewellery, because you see so much of it all the time. So it has to be something truly exceptional to stay with me, even if it is one of my own creations.

Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future?

My mother passed down a stone to me, which I will be setting into a ring soon. I have a phenomenal design in mind, so it’s just a matter of getting down to making it.
