WASHINGTON: US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders trounced Hillary Clinton in Utah’s Democratic caucuses, scoring a much-needed victory as he vies to slow Clinton’s march to the nomination.

Projections had shown that the Vermont senator was set to win nearly 75 percent of the available 33 delegates in the state.

Early results indicated that Sanders was leading the Democratic frontrunner by a whopping 50 percent.

Earlier in the evening, Clinton defeated Sanders in Arizona, the largest winner-take-all state on the map on Tuesday.

The two remaining Democratic contenders are also competing for Idaho, which Sanders is expected to win.

On the Republican side, frontrunner Donald Trump proved his appeal among immigration hard-liners in Arizona by clinching a convincing victory in the border state.

Trump won four of the five contests on March 15, building a considerable delegate advantage over Senator Ted Cruz.
