KARACHI: The newly appointed Sindh Inspector General (IG), Allah Dino Khawaja, on Monday assumed charge as the Sindh IG.

Khawaja, who earlier served as the Additional IG of the Special Branch, has replaced Ghulam Hyder Jamali after Jamali was removed from his post on Saturday. On Khawaja's arrival at the Central Police Office (CPO) on Monday, he was presented a guard of honour and several senior officials also welcomed him.

The newly appointed IG later held a meeting with senior police officials, including establishment DIG Muzaffar Shaikh, Karachi administration DIG Dr Ghulam Sarwar Jamali, finance DIG Sultan Khawaja, training DIG Iqbal Dara, the AIGs of establishment, welfare, operations and logistics and the director information technology.

The Sindh Police spokesperson quoted the IG as saying that professional responsibilities should be performed as per basic police rules and laws. It was decided at the meeting that those employees sacked for their involvement in crimes should not be restored, as the Sindh police have no need of such employees.

"It is the need of hour to ensure a people-friendly environment at every level in order to bring an improvement in the performance of the police department and any negligence or carelessness will be tolerated in this regard," said the IG. He said administrative and financial affairs should be improved and operations and investigations must be made transparent and impartial.

He directed the establishment DIG to resolve all under-process promotions in the department as per rules and regulations with immediate effect and to fix a particular day every week to hear appeals filed by employees, which should be dealt with during office hours.

IG Khawaja said that compensation should be paid immediately to those the families of martyred policemen and those who have died in the line of duty, adding that steps should be taken to ensure that the families are not made to visit to the office repeatedly. All affairs in this regard should be made easy, he said. The IG also said that steps would be taken to resolve problems faced by the public in confronting police officers and jawans at all levels in order to ensure effective police work.

IG Khawaja reportedly held meetings with the Governor of Sindh and finance and home secretaries as well.

Sources in the police department said that a large-scale reshuffle is expected in the coming days. Officials are likely to be removed or transferred and some officials have already been transferred. These include Adeel Hussain Chandio who has been posted as administration AIG at the CPO, replacing Syed Fida Hussain Shah who has been directed to report to the CPO. Qamar Raza Jiskani has been posted as logistics AIG, replacing Faisal Bashir Memon, while Naeem Ahmad Shaikh will look after the charge of finance AIG.

On the other hand, the Sindh Police's spokesperson denied rumours of the upcoming transfers in the department and clarified that there is no such plan under consideration; however, he said transfers and postings could be made as per rules and regulations, when required.
