KARACHI:

Health officials on Thursday confirmed from Jacobabad district this year’s second polio case from Sindh, taking the total number of cases in Pakistan to six.

Eighteen-month-old Noor Fatima from Union Council Lashari, Jacobabad district, contracted the virus even though she was administered the polio vaccine seven times during polio eradication drives and twice as part of routine immunisation, health authorities said.

The last polio case in Sindh was reported in Karachi.

A three-day polio eradication drive will begin in the port city on March 14. More than 2.2 million children under the age of five will be administrated the polio vaccine.

During his visit to the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) on Thursday, Karachi Commissioner Syed Asif Haider Shah said that over 12,000 security personnel will be deployed during the drive across the city.
