QUETTA: The Provincial Chief of Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) Shahzain Bugti was released from the district jail on Tuesday after the Balochistan High Court (BHC) approved his bail plea.

Shahzain Bugti was arrested on December 22, 2010, along with 26 guards when paramilitary troops recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, including anti-aircraft guns, from his possession.

The BHC approved the bail application and ordered the release of Shahzain and others on submission of surety bonds worth Rs500,000 each.

On Tuesday, Shahzain, who was admitted at the Sandeman Hospital, was sent back to jail where he inked the necessary documents for release.

A large number of party activists were present at the district jail where they welcomed their leader by showering flowers on him. The release of the other 26 is expected today (Wednesday).

Bugti told reporters that he will visit Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore to meet political leaders before organising a long march to Dera Bugti which would be led by his grandmother, the wife of late Nawab Akbar Bugti. “I had announced the long march for the rehabilitation of the people of Dera Bugti who were displaced during the military operation launched by former president Pervez Musharraf,” he said and categorically stated that the long march will take place at any cost and under any circumstances.

Shahzain alleged that government functionaries were involved in recent attacks on gas pipelines in the Bugti territory. “Local people are not blowing up pipelines. It is a conspiracy by government functionaries to create a serious law and order situation,” he said.

He urged that security forces should be withdrawn from Dera Bugti because their duty is to look after frontiers and not populated areas.
