LAHORE: A summary for the appointment of vice chancellors (VCs) at three public sector universities has been sent to the governor by the chief minister, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had interviewed 11 candidates for four vice chancellors’ positions on February 13. The interviews were held for Punjab University (PU), the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), the University of Sargodha (UOS) and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology (MNS-UET), Multan. The interview panel included Finance Minister Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairman Dr Nizamuddin, Zafar Iqbal Qureshi and Higher Education Department (HED) Secretary Irfan Ali and Dr Umar Saif.

Requesting anonymity an official said that the chief minister had approved the names of Dr Uzma Qureshi for the LCWU. “She is the acting VC of the university. For UoS, Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir, currently working as chairman of the Management Department at American University in the Emirates, has been selected. For MNS-UET, Dr Shahid Munir has been selected,” the official said.

He said that no decision has been made regarding the Punjab University vice chancellor. “The appointment has been delayed as the process has been challenged before the Lahore High Court.

The decision for the largest university of the province is expected to be taken after the court decides the case,” he said.

After the approval of the governor, a summary will be sent to the HED to notify the appointments. On February 13, Acting PU Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran, Behavioural and Social Sciences Dean Zakaria Zakar and Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir had been interviewed for PU VC’s slot.
