FAISALABAD:

The annual Spring Festival at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) began at the campus on Monday and will continue till Saturday.

The UAF has planned several events and competitions in connection with this festival. The idea is to engage with students, faculty members, families, pet enthusiasts and farmers, UAF Vice Chancellor Iqrar Ahmad Khan said.

The festival kicked off with a book fair at the university’s main library. The stalls at the book fair remained crowded with students and visitors throughout the day. As many as 70,000 books were up for sale at discounted rates and 32 stalls were set up.

“We must encourage the habit of reading books…reading remains central to our growth as students and scholars and it is our responsibility to encourage others to read as well,” Vice Chancellor Iqrar Ahmad Khan said.

He said the UAF was in the process of setting up a state-of-the-art three-storey library on 39,000 square feet. An e-library will be established on a large portion of it. “The internet is a treasure-trove of knowledge and we must make the most of it.” He said it would help the university keep up with changing trends. “However, we must not forget the benefits of reading good books…let’s not let the internet take away our love for good books.”

Several events have been planned for the week. An exhibition of prize agricultural produce, a greyhounds’ race, a Kissan convention, a fancy birds show, tent pegging and a nutrition festival are some of the events the university has planned for the week ahead.

The vice chancellor said the festival aimed to provide a platform to farmers, researchers and industry representatives to interact.

On Tuesday (today), an Agricultural Exhibition will be held at the Expo Centre and a Fancy Bird Show will start early in the morning. A tent pegging show will be held at 1pm. A competition for milk-producing cattle will be held on the same day.

The prize distribution ceremony for cattle breeders will be held on Wednesday (tomorrow). The university has organised a race for greyhounds on Wednesday in which 20 imported greyhounds and 25 greyhounds bred in the country will participate.  The race will start at 2pm.

An international seminar on the role of agricultural engineering and smart agriculture practices will be held on March 3 and March 4.

The Kissan Convention will kick off at 9:30am on March 5.  The National Institute of Food Sciences and Technology, UAF, will hold a Nutrition Mela on March 9 and 10. The idea behind the mela is promoting eating healthy food and having an active lifestyle.
