Even team captain can be dropped if he doesn't perform, warns PCB chief selector

Haroon Rasheed says PCB cannot force anyone to retire

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Haroon Rasheed warned on Monday that any player who does not perform for the team will not be considered.

“If a player or even a captain does not perform in the team, then automatically he will not be selected,” Rasheed said. “This happens in every cricketing country.”

Responding to a question regarding T20I captain Shahid Afridi, who once again taken a u-turn from his retirement decision, Haroon said it is totally a player's prerogative to retire from the game. "We cannot force anyone to retire," he told APP.



The former right-handed batsman also went on to say that PCB cannot frame rules for players to give in writing about their retirement plans, so they could not retrieve from their earlier statements.

Rasheed also refused all rumors about Sarfraz Ahmed taking over the ODI captaincy from Azhar Ali. Earlier, there were reports that the PCB was likely to appoint Sarfraz as the ODI captain after his performance in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL).



Azhar led Lahore Qalandars in the league, which was the only team to not qualify for the play-offs, while Sarfraz headed Quetta Gladiators, which ended up as the tournament's runner-up.

Reports also claimed that after T20 skipper Shahid Afridi’s retirement, Sarfraz will also lead the green-shirts in the shortest format of the game.

Haroon contradicted the report by saying, "These reports are totally baseless and does not have any weight in it."

He further said that Ahmed Shahzad was not selected due to his poor form, but he will be selected in future if he performs well in domestic cricket.
