Blogger Alysha Malik speaks to us about how she’s maintained her toned body and how New York changed her style of dressing!

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

How would you describe your body type?

Very straight, but toned.

Has your body type changed over the last five years?

Yes, dramatically! I had a lot of baby fat and was more athletic in high school, but over the years I’ve been doing yoga and eating healthy (not dieting). This has managed to slim me down quite a bit.

How has your style changed over the years?

I used to be your typical jeans, t-shirt and sneakers girl (don’t remind me of my Avril Lavine, punk rock phase). It was after I moved to New York that my style really changed and I learned to express myself better. New York taught me to view the world as a movie and to always dress like a character.

In your opinion what is your most troublesome area?

Luckily, I actually don’t have any! Thank God for that straight figure of mine.

How do you dress your body according to your body type?

I don’t want to sound arrogant, but most styles go with my body type. However, high-waist pants and crop tops are currently my favourites. I’m also in love with leather: button-up shirts, sneakers and anything else that classifies my style as androgynous. You’ll typically find me wearing a dress and sneakers at a formal event so that I can be comfortable and dance the night away.

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here?

Trying to follow trends too hard or allowing your mother to dress you. Fashion is a statement of your inner self. It is important to not follow everything you see because it may not suit your body type. Everyone should get to know what works for them and play around with that as a base. The most important thing is to walk with confidence and be yourself.

What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?

Tight dresses, stilettos and saris, I don’t like to be confined in my clothing. Clothes should help you in your everyday life and not be a burden. Given the security situation, I always like to think “Can I escape fast enough in this outfit or not?”
