Epic contest: Diamond Paints win Royal Residencia Aibak Polo Cup

LAHORE: The Diamond Paints team clinched the Royal Residencia Aibak Polo Cup 2016 on Sunday. The Learning Alliance lost the match by 9 goals to 4. The chief guest for the final was National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. He distributed prizes among the winners. The match had been arranged by the Lahore Polo Club.

In the first chukkar, the Diamond Paints team established a strong lead of three goals. Santiago scored twice while Saqib Khan Khakwani scored once. In the second chukkar, Ahmad Ali Tiwana and Imtiaz helped the Learning Alliance reduce the margin with one goal each.

However, Khakwani returned with two more goals to take the lead to 5-2. In the third chukkar, Santiago scored two more goals. In the fourth chukkar, Khakwani added another goal to his count.

Imtiaz Peeraz of Learning Alliance scored the last two goals but could not save his team. It is the third major polo event to have been won by the Diamond Paints this season. At the concluding ceremony, Sadiq distributed trophies and individual prizes among the players.

Royal Residencia CEO Sheikh Muhammad Ayyub, Lahore Polo Club president Irfan Ali Haider, members Umer Saeed Niazi, Ali Malik, Agha Najeeb and their families were also present.

Talking to the media, Sadiq said that it had been an interesting match. “I feel really good whenever I come here to watch a match at the club,” he said.

Diamond Paints CEO Mir Shoaib Ahmed said that the combination of players and their horses was very important in a polo match. “Our team played like a unit. We are happy that it is the third mega contest won by Diamond Paints,” he said.

Saqib Khan Khakwani said new players had been included in several polo teams. “The Diamond Paints has emerged as the best team of this season,” he said. He expressed the hope that the team would do well in the upcoming Punjab Cup and the National Quaid-i-Azam Cup.
