LAHORE:

A polio worker was injured when an unidentified armed man shot at him in Lahore on Wednesday.

According to Sanda police station, a two-member polio team comprising Umer Afridi and Kiran were conducting an immunisation campaign on Zamzama Street near Rivaz garden when a masked man fired three shots at them.

No police official had been deputed with the team.

“Unfortunately, the polio team could not inform the local police station before starting the drive,” SHO Khalid Farooq explained.

He added that the suspect chased the polio workers before shooting into the ground. One of the bullets, Farooq said, had ricocheted off the floor before hitting Afridi.

Following the incident, Afridi was rushed to the Mayo Hospital for treatment where doctors said he had received a shallow bullet wound in his right leg and described his situation as stable.

In the meantime, the polio immunisation drive in Lahore, which had started on February 15, was halted for the day.
