A day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hit out at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for recent raids on government offices, a spokesperson of the accountability body has said it respected the prime minister and his opinion.

“Government’s policy to avoid intervening in NAB activities is what makes the body independent,” Express News quoted a spokesperson as saying.

The accountability process should be improved according to the directives given by the prime minister, he added.

PM Nawaz had asked the top corruption watchdog to act ‘responsibly’.

Nawaz threatens action against NAB over harassment of govt officials

NAB, which operates under the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, is tasked to eliminate corruption from Pakistan through a holistic approach involving awareness, prevention and enforcement.

“NAB needs to take up cases only after thorough initial investigation. No one should be harassed without verification and solid proof,” said the prime minister while addressing a gathering of PML-N’s local government representatives in Bahawalpur on Tuesday.
