Sunday Bazaars: Prices of most vegetables higher

Shoppers complain about unavailability of several vegetables

LAHORE: Prices of most vegetables were higher at Sunday Bazaars compared to last week.

During a visit to Shadman’s Sunday Bazaar, it was observed that prices were stable during the morning hours when authority figures were present there. There was a shortage of essential items at noon when the number of shoppers was higher.

Some shoppers The Express Tribune spoke to said several vegetables, including bitter gourd, cauliflower, capsicum and fenugreek (methi), were available only outside the weekly market.

According to the official price list, the prices of potatoes had risen by Rs1 a kilogramme to Rs10 to Rs12 a kilogramme. Tomatoes sold for Rs30 to Rs35 a kilogramme registering a hike of Rs3 a kilogramme.

The prices of onions were lower by Rs3 a kilogramme to Rs28 to Rs32 a kilogramme. Garlic (Indian) sold for Rs118 to Rs125 a kilogramme. However, some shoppers complained that vendors were selling it at the price of premium produce (Rs275 to Rs280 a kilogramme). Garlic (Chinese) sold for Rs215 to Rs225 a kilogramme.

Ginger (Thai) sold for Rs50 to Rs55 a kilogramme and its Chinese variety for Rs85 to Rs95 a kilogramme.

Mongray prices registered a Rs10 a kilogramme hike as these sold for Rs25 to Rs30 a kilogramme. The vegetable was, however, hardly seen at any stall. Brinjals price had reduced by Rs5 a kilogramme to Rs20 to Rs23 a kilogramme.

Spinach prices remained stable at Rs10 to Rs15 a kilogramme; some vendors sold it for Rs20 a kilogramme.

The prices of lemons (Chinese) were also stable at Rs40 to Rs50 a kilogramme. The prices of bitter gourd had fallen by Rs2 a kilogramme to Rs75 to Rs80 a kilogramme. However, vendors were soon out of it. The vendors blamed the unavailability on the limited supply.

Capsicums prices were higher by Rs13 a kilogramme; the produce sold for Rs50 to Rs58 a kilogramme. Radishes sold for Rs8 to Rs10 a kilogramme.

Cauliflower prices were down by Rs6 a kilogramme to Rs8 to Rs10 a kilogramme.

Fenugreek prices were Rs8 to Rs10 a kilogramme but it was not available in the bazaar. The vegetable sold for Rs50 to Rs60 a kilogramme outside the weekly bazaar.

Okra prices were down by Rs10 a kilogramme to Rs70 to Rs80 a kilogramme.

The prices of peas had risen by Rs5 a kilogramme to Rs30. Turnip sold for Rs8 to Rs11 a kilogramme.
