Wheat harvest: Open procurement centres: farmers
Last year, over 4.5 million tonnes of wheat crop was produced in Sindh
HYDERABAD:
The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has expressed concern over the ‘huge’ financial loss to wheat farmers due to the delay in opening of procurement centres. At a meeting at SCA’s office in Hyderabad on Sunday, attended by members from other districts, including Karachi, via video link, farmers’ representatives demanded immediate supply of gunny bags and opening of the centres. The government is supposed to begin free supply of bags and open the official buying centres, under the supervision of the food department, with the onset of the wheat harvest season. According to the SCA, the harvest has started in Mirpurkhas region while the other regions will follow suit in the coming days. Participants of the meeting also complained of the low price of wheat in the open market [Rs1,100]. Last year, over 4.5 million tonnes of wheat crop was produced in Sindh.
