PESHAWAR:

An MoU was signed between University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Science and Technology and Information Technology (ST&IT) department to resolve the energy crisis in the province.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, the agreement aimed to better utilise renewable energy resources.  UET  Vice Chancellor Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani and ST&IT Secretary Farah Hamid Khan signed the MoU.

As per the agreement, a state-of-the-art laboratory will be established at UET to test and certify a solar photovoltaic system, whereby solar energy is used to produce electricity.

“The lab will be built at US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCAS-E),” read the statement. “It will cost Rs47 million. The K-P Directorate of Science and Technology will provide Rs50 million to the USPCAS-E to develop products that can help resolve energy problems.”

Gillani said the initiative will enable faculty members and researchers to meet global challenges. “It will also ensure facilities are offered at the laboratory at the varsity,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The vice chancellor added the initiative will help in human resource development, and enable researchers to test and certify new emerging technologies.

Speaking on the occasion, Hamid said the provincial government will continue to support UET to resolve the energy crisis through innovative and viable research projects.

She lauded the initiatives at USPCAS-E to establish a testing and certification laboratory.

“Similar efforts and initiatives based on research and innovations need to be replicated across all public sector universities in K-P,” the document quoted the secretary as saying.

According to Hamid, USAID’s plans to establish USPCAS-E at UET are commendable.

USAID is funding scholarships for 50 students selected from underprivileged families in K-P and the tribal belt to attend master’s programmes at USPCAS-E. Nearly half of the scholarships are reserved for women.
