RAWALPINDI: A judge allowed a civil engineering student to appear in his final exams after his university’s vice chancellor prohibited him from doing so.

Zaheer Ahsan, from University of Engineering and Technology Taxila, filed a writ petition through his lawyer Saeed Ahmed in Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging his exclusion from the university for six months without issuing a show cause notice.

A clash between the university’s students over a girl had resulted in the expulsion of 14 students on December 9.  Zaheer Ahsan, who was accused of breach in university discipline, had appeared before a disciplinary committee which, according to the lawyer of the petitioner, resolved the matter.

However, the registrar later issued a notification to Ahsan prohibiting him from sitting in his final exam one week before it was scheduled.

“The vice chancellor based this decision on his personal bias against the students,” maintained the counsel.

The final exam is scheduled from January 17 to 22. Ahmed further argued that if the petitioner is not allowed to appear, his future would be destroyed.

Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh of LHC directed that the petitioner be allowed to sit in the exam.
