We visit the home of the magnetic furniture and interior designer, Rabia Hassan, to talk about her favourite space

We visit the home of the magnetic furniture and interior designer, Rabia Hassan, to talk about her favourite space. She chose her TV lounge, which is complete with a daybed and a dog to curl up next to!

There are some homes that instantly speak volumes about the owner as soon as you step inside the door. Rabia Hassan’s home is one such place. It is full of warmth and good vibes, much like her. We take a few steps from her main door to a sitting room and then a few more to walk into her favourite corner.

The walls are painted in deep tones all around the house and beautiful sand-coloured wallpaper brightens her favourite hangout space.  There is a collection of paintings behind her deep green daybed and plenty of colourful handloom cushions from Uzbekistan add contrast atop it.

“I don’t go to sleep before sitting here for at least an hour. This is where I completely relax! I just have to be here and chill out — not think about work, my kids or anything else. This is just my time and this is my corner.”

Her favourite piece of furniture in the room is her foot-stool — it had to be moved into the shot because of its importance! Rabia shares that she made the stool a couple of years ago, and the embroidered piece covering it is antique.

Her space is a welcome relief from many monochrome contemporary interiors. She says excitedly, “I love colour, haan, I love colour!”

There is a window casting late-afternoon light into the room, which overlooks a Gulmohar tree. “During its flowering season, the view is filled with red flowers and people insist on sitting near the window when it is in full bloom” she says.

With accents of colour and glimpses of nature, old pieces intermingled with new — Rabia Hassan’s place is a testament to her design sense and talent.
