While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

The beautiful black Maheen Karim cape is from her A/W 2015 collection called ‘Tempo di Festa’, a celebration of the vivacious, glittering city of Karachi. Samia Akram brought marvellous hand-crafted jewellery from international jewellers Isharya and Kenneth Jay Lane to elegantly adorn the cape and prop up the mysterious black velvet.

Maheen Karim

Maheen Karim pieces are my absolute favourites as they are classic yet so versatile. This particular velvet cape would be one of my top choices for a formal or even semi-formal event. I settled for my all-time favourite, casual-chic look. To create this, I wore a basic white tank top and paired it with my favourite distressed jeans from Zara. For my makeup, I went with a classic look: minimal eyes with bold lips. My shoes of choice were nude pointy Christian Louboutins and I added a maroon vintage Chanel clutch to match my lipstick. At last, I put the cape on sideways, which created a one-shoulder look as one arm was covered with the velvet fabric, and the other was left bare. I proceeded to hook the cape up, in order to show the beautiful embellishments on the neck.

When I first set my eyes on the cape, I couldn’t help but admire its elegance and the stunning embellishments around the edges and the neck. Almost instantly I thought to myself that in order to complement the cape and be true to my style, I want to amp up the bling factor! The obvious first step would be to style it with some glamorous accessories, and I ended up going for a pair of ruby and diamond tops, a diamond bangle, a plain black Bottega Veneta knot clutch and strappy diamanté-encrusted Gucci heels – for some additional oomph! Already adorned, I decided to keep my clothes simple and keep the elegance of the cape. So I decided to wear it with black culottes, and tuck in a plain black top. To add a pop of colour, I did a bright red lip colour with simple eyeliner. The way I styled it, it can easily be worn to a formal dinner, engagement, or even a wedding. I absolutely love how versatile it is.

I decided to opt for a very glamorous look due to the black velvet material and formal sophistication of the cape. For this, I started off by choosing a gold, high-neck jumpsuit by Sonya Jamil, with gold heels to match, and accessorized it with a pair of gold earrings and a black bangle. I completed the look with a Dune clutch, which I felt would bring together the outfit due to the fact that it has both black and gold details. To complement this look, I gave myself a bronze sun-kissed tan using make-up, and got a curly blow-dry. Moving on to the cape, I folded the collar of the cape over, and hung it over me like a wrap. Outfit complete! I would wear this outfit on a very formal night out, an event like a ball, or even to a fusion dholki!
