Chishti added that he has been told by his sources that the Karachi police is “playing a double game” in the investigation. He told The Express Tribune that: “The affidavits will be filed on Saturday and we will also hold a press conference then”.
“We are writing a letter to the consul-general of Saudi Arabia in Karachi about their support of Sultan Masjid,” he said. Earlier, Imam Munir Ahmed Shakir had said that the mosque’s expenditure is borne by the Saudi government. However, Darakshan Police Station SHO Rana Amjad said that Chishti’s application does not have any evidence. “The sermons and the prayers on Friday are monitored very closely by the police and the Special Branch and a report is issued about them. No such incitement has occurred.”
Amjad said: “We have found no pamphlets that mention any fatwas. We told the imam of Sultan Masjid as well that if anyone is distributing such literature outside the mosque it is your responsibility”.
“If Ali Kamran Chishti has any proof, he should give it to the police,” Amjad added. Chishti also claimed that he has received threats from people, claiming to be part of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. The co-complainants are MNA Sherry Rehman and Shaan Taseer. The application asks for the imam to be investigated for a sermon where he allegedly provoked hatred against Rehman.
