The ebullient Ali sisters behind the salon Blowdry Bar share their hilarious childhood memories with us

January 24, 2016

We meet up with the ebullient Ali sisters – Maryam is the brains behind the salon Blowdry Bar, while Dubai-based Fatima is a free-lance event co-ordinator. The adventurous twosome share their hilarious childhood memories with us

What’s your first memory of each other?

Maryam: All my first memories were with her since we were perpetual roommates for 26 odd years.

Fatima: Right after our parents would tuck us into bed and leave the room, we would get up and start playing. We always had an ear to the door, and if we heard them coming back, we would pretend to be asleep. They almost always played along even though they knew we were still awake.

What is the craziest thing you have done together?

Maryam: We’ve done plenty of crazy things together, but I refuse to have the craziest written down in history! We’ve climbed trees, ran on single-brick boundary walls, climbed to the roof of our house using a ladder and a window AC frame. Looking back now, I realize our mother must have had nerves of steel to deal with the two of us!

Fatima: We use to get up on the boundary wall of our house at opposite ends and run towards each other. The goal was to cross each other without falling. It took us a few years, but we did it!

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the other’s closet, what would it be?

Maryam: Somehow, everything she owns looks better and feels more comfortable. Even if I own the exact same thing! But if I had to pick one thing, I’d pick her super-comfy grey PJs that she spends most of her days and nights in.

Fatima: I think all sisters would agree, when you know you have the option of your sister’s closet, you feel like you have no clothes at all. I’ve always felt like I never have any t-shirts and Maryam always had a huge variety! But my favorite item has been her UofT t-shirt; I could live in that forever.

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would you do?

Maryam: Oh, my life would be sorted if I could switch places with her. I would finally organize all my closets. Hint: come to Lahore and help me sort my life out!

Fatima: Learn to be rational and diplomatic.

What is the one thing you love about your sibling?

Maryam: I love everything about Fatty; I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s a great listener, and always gives an unbiased perspective on situations. Hashim and I can safely give her the title of mama bear!

Fatima: I love everything about Maryam! But most of all I love the happy, positive energy she brings into our lives.

If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up?

Maryam: Both of us have insanely inflated egos and have a hard time saying sorry. But, we also can’t go too long without talking to each other, so one of us always starts the conversation like nothing happened. It will usually be about something no more important than what to wear for a night out.

Fatima: That’s easy. We don’t talk about the fight, but one of us will start a conversation about something to engage the other, and soon the fight will be behind us. We cannot go too long without talking to each other.

What is one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you had too?

Maryam: She can walk, talk, sprint and run a marathon in heels.

Fatima: She gives one hell of a blowdry! It’s not really a hidden secret anymore, since she opened Blowdry Bar.

Describe your sibling in three words:

Maryam: An organized disco hermit.

Fatima: A loving, laid-back monkey.

Which fictional character is your sister most like?

Maryam: I have to say I’ve always thought of Fatima whenever I saw Princess Jasmine. The reason being her appearance, and also because she is a relatively adventurous, free-spirited, well … princess! Everyone who knows her would agree.

Fatima: Maryam is definitely Wonder Woman. She’s got a lot of energy and she’s strong. She’s a born leader and an accomplished businesswoman. She knows how to act rationally and can be very diplomatic. Sigh, how I wish I were more like that!

I can’t live without my sister because…

Maryam: She is the ping to my pong, the normal to my crazy … just kidding! I just can’t live without my zameer ki awaz! She keeps me grounded and takes on whatever role I need her to take. From mama bear to older sister, even though she’s barely older, to my confidante, my best friend or even a CID maestro!

Fatima: She is and always will be my accomplice and sidekick!
