The top citizen registration body has shown little progress in collecting and compiling computerised records of millions of foreigners living in Pakistan.
The National Registration and Database Authority (Nadra) was tasked with compiling the data of aliens of different nationalities in Pakistan after the government merged the National Alien Registration Authority (Nara) into Nadra.
The decision was taken on the directives of the prime minister after Nara completely failed to serve its purpose.
The Nara-Nadra merger was supposed to reveal how many illegal immigrants had been issued Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) by matching the records of both organisations. No official data is available, however, at Nadra’s offices across the country, excluding Karachi.
So far the authorities have been unable to identify the exact number of illegal immigrants, which law enforcement agencies believe are a serious threat to national security.
