A policeman, deployed on security duty for a polio team in Gujranwala on Tuesday, was attacked by some men and injured.
Police said the polio workers Constable Aijaz Ahmad had been deployed to provide security to were going door-to-door administering polio vaccine on Sialkot Road, Gujranwala, when some men shot at Ahmad.
They said that Ahmad was taken to a hospital for treatment.
No polio worker was injured in the attack.
The police soon cordoned off the area.
Health EDO Saeed Ullah said it was not an attack on the polio team.
“Their work was not hindered and they continued to administer polio drops in the area.”
Civil Lines SP Nadeem Khokhar said that the attackers had targeted Constable Ahmad over a personal rivalry.
City Police Officer Waqas Nazir said that the polio workers were unharmed and the suspects had attacked the police constable only.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has condemned the attack.
He told health officials to provide Constable Ahmad the best possible medical treatment.
He directed law enforcement agencies to arrest the culprits involved in the incident on priority.
