QUETTA: Two Pakistan Coast Guard officials were killed and three injured in a home-made bomb attack in the Jiwani area of Gwadar district on Saturday.

“A single cabin vehicle guarding a Pakistan Coast Guards water tanker hit an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on a roadside in the Jiwani area,” a Levies official told newsmen. “As a result, two Coast Guards officials were killed on the spot and three others sustained injuries,” he said.

Security forces and rescuers rushed to the site and cordoned off the area. The casualties were driven to the nearby District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

According to the Levies official, the tanker was supplying water to Coast Guard check-points when it was targeted. “The single-cabin vehicle was destroyed in the blast and the tanker was damaged,” he added.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The deceased were identified as Hawaldar Ameer Abdullah and Kishwar Hussain, and the injured as Muhammad Alam, Sohail Ahmed and Muhammad Tariq. Those with life-threatening wounds were referred to Karachi for specialised treatment.

Security forces mounted a manhunt in the area around the blast site for the attackers, but there were no immediate reports of any arrests.
