KARACHI: Pakistan T20I skipper Shahid Afridi has said that the team’s combination is likely to remain the same in the World T20 as he does not want to make too many changes to the squad announced for the tour of New Zealand.

The captain stated that he has spoken to the national selectors and the management that it would be important to take the same team forward so that there is good chemistry and players have confidence for the mega event.

“The World T20 is right around the corner, so we can’t make too many changes and I would like the same team to continue,” said Afridi while speaking to reporters in Lahore. “Mohammad Irfan has been rested but hasn’t been completely ruled out for the World T20. He remains in the list of 17 to 20 players and will be called up when required.”

Pakistan will be travelling to New Zealand on January 9 where they will play three ODIs and as many T20Is, after which they will be involved in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

New Zealand’s series is the last assignment of the game’s shortest format for the side before the World T20.

There are concerns regarding fast-bowler Mohammad Amir’s visa, but Afridi remains hopeful the issue would not hurt the team.

“We hope Amir receives his visa in time, but even if he doesn’t, we have options that can come in and our balance wouldn’t be disturbed at all,” stated Afridi.

The skipper reiterated his support for the youngster, who is back in the national fold after serving his punishment for being involved in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal.

Twenty20 captain Afridi backs Amir selection

“For me, he has always been truthful about his mistake and that is why I have a soft spot for him,” said Afridi.

Meanwhile, he threw his weight behind Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez to occupy Pakistan’s opening spots. “My combination would be to have Ahmed and Hafeez as openers and if any change is required, we can promote Sarfraz Ahmed, who is a courageous player and has opened well in the past,” concluded Afridi.
