ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has asked the Ministry of Water and Power and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to maintain close coordination for achieving a speedy progress on the proposed power projects based on re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG).

“Complete transparency and efficiency should be ensured in undertaking the projects,” he said while chairing a meeting on Saturday which reviewed progress on the 1,000-megawatt RLNG-based power projects aimed at aiding efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply of electricity in the country.

Federal Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, senior officers of the ministries of finance, water and power, petroleum and natural resources, Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) and National Transmission and Dispatch Company participated in the meeting.

PPIB Managing Director Shah Jahan Mirza gave an update on activities carried out to meet the timelines agreed for implementing the projects.

He pointed out that sites had been identified and finalised for developing projects of 600MW, where gas supply and power transmission arrangements were already in place.

Sites for the remaining projects had also been identified and would be finalised shortly keeping in view the aspects of gas availability and power transmission infrastructure, he said.

Meeting participants said all activities were being carried out as per agreed timelines and no delay had been encountered so far. Regular consultation was being made with all relevant departments and stakeholders.

They expressed satisfaction over progress on the LNG-based power projects and stressed that timelines be strictly adhered to in future as well, so that the projects could come on stream as planned.

Sounds great - how about outlining exactly what projects as well as the status of each project? Are they being built? When are they coming on-line? Were they subject to competitive bidding? Who's building them at what cost and how are they going to be paid for? Also - once built are they connected to transmission lines and do they lines have the capacity to handle the power generated?
