KARACHI: A large number of people staged a protest against the killing of a general store owner in Lyari allegedly by unidentified armed gangsters in Lyari neighbourhood on Friday.

Unidentified armed men shot and killed a general store owner, Jahanzaib Zaman, 28, while he was sitting at his shop located at Maulvi Omar Road within the limits of the Kalakot police station. He was shot multiple times and died on the spot. The body was taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for autopsy and later handed over to his family. The deceased was a resident of the same area.

Kalakot SHO Ayaz Khan, while quoting the initial investigation, said that Lyari gangsters might have been behind the incident and that they killed the victim over suspicion of being a police informer. Further investigations are underway. Following the incident, a large number of the victim's family members, relatives and neighbours gathered and reached the Karachi Press Club along with the body of the victim to record their protest. The protesters later tried to move towards the Sindh Chief Minister House to record the protest. However, the law enforcers closed all the roads leading towards the CM House while the protesters staged a sit-in near Shaheen Complex, which caused massive traffic jam.

The protesters also shouted slogans against the Lyari gangs and in favour of the Rangers. A contingent of law enforcers reached the protest site and calmed the protesters down while negotiating with them. The police and Rangers senior officials assured the protesters of arresting the culprits soon. The protesters later ended their protest after the assurance of the law enforcers.
