Adnan Sami granted Indian citizenship

Published: December 31, 2015

Pakistani singer Adnan Sami on Thursday was granted Indian citizenship, effective from January 1, 2016, following his appeal to legalise his stay in India on humanitarian grounds, The Indian Express reported.

Last month, Pakistan refused to confirm renunciation of nationality by Adnan Sami over his alleged disrespectful behaviour towards his national identity.

Adnan Sami applies again for Indian citizenship

Authorities refused to issue the “renunciation of citizenship certificate” to the famous singer in a move which can hurt his efforts to adopt the Indian nationality. The certificate is necessary for any Pakistani citizen who wants to adopt the citizenship of any other country.

“I don’t need the green passport anymore. I have found my home in India,” the official quoted a line from a letter, said to have been written by Sami, attached with his Pakistani passport posted to Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi. Officials said the Pakistani singer would now have to submit an unconditional apology for his behaviour and follow the correct procedure for getting the renunciation certificate.

The Lahore-born artist first arrived in India on March 13, 2001, on a visitor’s visa with the validity of one year, which was issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

Pakistan refuses to revoke Adnan Sami’s nationality

Sami was allowed to stay in India for an indefinite period following his appeal to authorities in New Delhi to legalise his stay on humanitarian grounds after his Pakistani passport expired. He was exempted from proceedings under Section 3 of the Foreigners Act.

If the Pakistani diplomats had quietly processed Mr. Sami’s paperwork, they would have been spared all this publicity about Mr. Sami’s renunciation of Pakistani citizenship. Instead they set this trap for themselves where the Indians and Mr. Sami can bash them repeatedly. I liken this situation to that of Mr. Husain Haqqani in the United States who has become Pakistan’s unappointed ambassador while the embassy in Washington, DC is reduced to stamping visas.Recommend

Adnan Sami Khan is welcome to India. It is his personal decision based on his personal goal. He could have opted for British or Canadian citizenship. Some Indians might have preferred to go to Pakistan or Bangladesh or elsewhere depending on personal goals and opportunities. India is open to people irrespective of race, ethnicity or religious preferences of aspirants who will like to opt for Indian citizenship. India believes in equal opportunity for all of her citizens. Mrs.Sonia Gandhi was Italian
before she opted for Indian citizenship. Two nation theory is again proved redundant. But that is history now. India accepts Pakistan as a sovereign nation who are free to decide their
    own constitution,policies.Recommend

Pakistan allows dual Nationality – that is how so many Politicians and elites have a back-up passport. Indian does not allow dual Nationality. If you acquire a foreign Passport, you must surrender your Indian passport ( after paying a steep fee too!). There is the OCI card of course, but that is not passport and holder doesnot become a Citizen, just allows visa free travel and working rights. Recommend

As the cliche goes …’ it’s economy stupid’. He needed more buyers for his trade. He got it in India. He always lead a privileged life being son of Pakistani diplomat. in the hindsight Pakistan played important role in making him what he is today (allegedly, of course !) but neither government of Pakistan can change his mind nor class-based society of India can deter his approach. He came from elites….stays in elites so no country is issue for him. The move has only enabled him to sell himself for little longer and presumably shelf-life. Good for him….. in my humble opinion for a discerning mind, no one is at loss.Recommend

“If in every home one child was taught Hindustani classical music this country would never have been partitioned”……………quote from Bare Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib.

Bare Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib was perhaps the first Muslim artist who left Pakistan soon after partition and returned permanently to India. He must be having his good reasons!

Likewise I wish the Lahore-born Adnan a very musical and successful life in India. He gives me one more reason to love India.
