Love to pose!

What sparked your interest in designing bags?

I started designing handbags purely as a hobby and creative outlet while pursuing my undergraduate degree in economics and finance. I started my brand Patina but these bags have become increasingly popular. They are known as Meera Barlas bags.

How do you turn your inspirations into reality?

To be honest, a lot of times, playing around with embellishments and exploring different fabrics does the job as well! It is spontaneous creativity coupled with aesthetics. Inspiration is all around us and it is amazing how sometimes an idea just ‘sparks’ and you can picture it so clearly. It could be inspiration from stunning window displays, magazine ads, intricate architecture or beautiful patterns online. Translating my inspiration boards (digital or physical) into reality is the best part! My collection consists of bags which have been embellished with katdana and beads, as well as some embroidery. It’s more of a fusion, where eastern embellishments meet western style.

What is the one bag type for all seasons?

One bag type for so many reasons! I mainly do only clutch bags — both daytime and evening bags. I think they make for a real statement piece. I love the size, shape and feel of a clutch bag —  it’s the real arm candy for all seasons!

What is the hardest part about working in the industry?

At times, the lack of variety in the fabrics/frames available for handbags in the market is a bit challenging. I’ve also recently relocated to Doha so it’s been a little difficult to get work done all the way from here. I have a four-member team operating from a workshop in Karachi. I work on designing and selling bags intermittently and when I need to utilise my creative energy.

You are currently venturing into home accessories as well. How different do you think the two genres are from each other?

Interior decorating and fashion designing are different fields altogether and yet both the genres are largely about visual aesthetics and great taste. Both my ventures in personal fashion and home fashion allow me a creative expression and I love it. I have always been extremely passionate about interiors and recently started an exciting new venture in home decor. It will allow me to travel the world and select lovely accessories to inspire beautiful home decorating. I hope I am able to put forward some exquisite choices for family and friends.

How would you encourage women to become successful entrepreneurs?

I think it’s important to take initiative and do something one is truly passionate about. Women in Pakistan are so talented and there are a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs in the making.

Any advice for women looking to enter the industry?

If you’re passionate and creative, you will absolutely love designing handbags! A lot of hard work goes into getting things done but it is really rewarding.
