PESHAWAR:

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution on youth, peace and security.

This was mentioned in a press release issued by Aware Girls, an organisation led by young women, on Friday.

“The document of the resolution is the first of its kind to recognise the positive role young people play in building sustainable peace,” stated the document. UN Security Council Resolution 2250 calls on member states to create policies which support the socio-economic development of young people. It urges member states to support youth peace efforts in “conflict and post-conflict settings”.

“It also encourages those involved in disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration to ensure programmes are designed to consider the special needs of the youth,” it added.

According to the press release, there is a need to involve the youth in matters of peace and security because conflict directly impacts their future.

The UN security resolution advocacy was started by an international network of youth-led peace-building organisations known as UNOY Peacebuilders.

The network has been working intensively since 2012 to ensure dialogue between young peace builders and policymakers at the international level.
