PESHAWAR: At least 512 students of Khyber Medical College (KMC)’s 2012 and 2013 academic sessions graduated on Thursday.

The convocation ceremony was held at University of Peshawar’s convocation hall.

Around 43 students were awarded gold medals for their academic achievements. Lifetime achievements awards were also distributed among professors and scholars for their sustained commitment in the field of health and education. Mamoonur Rashid won 11 gold medals whereas Saeed Ali received 10. On the other hand, Ambreen Subhan won six gold medals while Ayesha Aziz earned four gold medals.

What the future holds

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan congratulated students for their academic performance. He urged graduating students to work hard to excel in their professions. “Graduates should be equipped to face challenges and give back to the community,” he said. “They must serve people with commitment.”

Dissatisfaction

Mehtab said the health and education sectors in the province have failed to effectively utilise resources to achieve the desired results.

“There is a need to devise a comprehensive policy on health and education,” he said. “This will ensure existing resources can be utilised at an optimum level.” The governor said all resources should be utilised to boost education and improve the health sector.

“Education plays a pivotal role in the progress and prosperity of society,” he said. “Higher education institutes, especially medical colleges, should inculcate the spirit of social work and public health education.”

Grant for success

The governor also announced a grant of Rs1 million for the social welfare society of the college and another Rs1 million for its exchange programme with a university in Toledo, Ohio. The initiative aims to provide training to faculty members.

Annual performance

KMC Principal Dr Aijaz Hassan Khan also presented the institute’s annual performance report. He urged the government to construct a sports ground and a five-storey hostel for students. The governor vowed to help KMC in this regard.
