KARACHI:

For the first time in the country, a surgical procedure for removing kidney stones on day-care basis was performed during an international surgical workshop held at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Tuesday.

The surgical procedure called 'mini perc' was performed for the benefit of both children and adults. Renowned India surgeon Mahesh Desai supervised the workshop. According to the surgeons, the best part of this minimal invasive surgery is that through this procedure, stones that are not traceable can be removed.

Similarly, Australian surgeon John Swennin carried out a complex vascular surgery required for kidney patients. The two-day workshop which was attended by over 800 doctors is a part of a five-day international symposium arranged by the SIUT to mark the 40-year journey of its philosophy of providing treatment free with dignity.

A total of 12 workshops have been arranged that include four surgical workshops.

The international congress will start from December 9.
