Alienacs, rejoice!
Every time a Ridley Scott movie is on the radar, you tend to anticipate its arrival with a mix of cautious excitement.
I have always found Ridley Scott to be an infuriatingly hit-and-miss filmmaker. On one hand, we have got cinematic masterpieces including Blade Runner, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, while on the other, we have got celluloid monstrosities like G.I. Jane, Robin Hood and Exodus: Gods and Kings, where you are forced to wonder what the hell the Knighted Englishman is smoking.
Every single time a Ridley Scott movie is on the radar, you tend to anticipate its arrival with a bizarre mixture of cautious excitement, and Alien: Covenant is no different.
The trailer of the sequel to the atmospheric but yet frustratingly cryptic Prometheus and prequel to the cult-classic original Alien series dropped on Christmas Eve. Claiming that this release is an early Crimbo present for Alienacs all across the globe would not really be off the mark.
Prometheus dealt with how a crew sent to investigate the beginning of life on Earth, and sought out a mysterious, god-like race known as the Engineers, and Alien: Covenant continues the trend. It revolves around a troop belonging to the spaceship covenant, traveling to the planet where the Prometheus duo David (Michael Fassbender) and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) ended.
The Engineer starship from Prometheus can be seen in the trailer and simply based on that shot alone; it wouldn’t be unlikely to assume that David and Shaw return in the sixth instalment of the Alien Franchise. In fact, there is another shot where a mysterious hooded character emerges from the darkness and if I were a betting man, I would put my money on him being the android David.
The members of the covenant ship are led by a Michael Fassbender in an instance which presumably, is an identical android created by the Weyland Corporation.
Judging by the trailer, I believe this latest addition to the Alienverse will be a blend of both Prometheus and the original Alien series; they would still be probing the galaxy for answers to the great mystery that is humanity’s relationship with God. The trailer also illustrates that you have the old-school Alien vibe, with all those whatever-they-are-called-this-time-around-morphs, the front-shredding, back-bursting, blood splatters and more.
Too often these days a trailer tends to spell out how the movie is going to unravel – every little plot twist is included – but with this particular trailer the only thing you can guess with any ounce of certainty is, good or bad, you are going to be in for one hell of a scary ride.
Alien: Covenant opens in theatres on May 19th, 2017.
