The Solomon Islands sit on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity due to collisions between continental plates.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in September but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warnings were issued.
