Flight lands safely; Indian civil aviation minister says there was a leak in the hydraulic system

At least five people were injured after an Air India flight caught fire mid-air on Monday as it prepared for landing at Delhi Airport, International Business Times reported.

A major disaster was averted as the pilot managed to safely land the Air India flight, AI-405, with 153 people on board, including 146 passengers, after it caught fire just before landing at the Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi.

However, at least five passengers received minor injuries during the incident.

Indian Civil Aviation Minister Mahesh Sharma informed the media that the pilot came to know about a leak in the hydraulic system in air when it was in the process of landing. Emergency was declared at the airport and fire brigade and other rescue teams were alerted after the pilot informed the air traffic control about the fire outbreak.

"Air India flight AI-405 from Varanasi to Delhi had an emergency landing here as the pilot reported hydraulic failure. All passengers were evacuated safely; however, some five of them sustained minor injuries during evacuation," PTI quoted airport sources as saying.

Later on, the airline tweeted saying that AI-405 had an emergency landing, however, all the passengers are safe and have been evacuated.
