Good practices: Safeguard management reviewed at workshop

The four-day Pak-Afghan workshop on Regional Exchange on Good Practices in Environmental Safeguard Management concluded on Friday. The workshop, arranged under the auspices of the Asian Development Bank, was meant for environmental safeguard staff at project implementation units and project management units of ADB-funded projects in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As many as 30 participants, including a 10-member delegation from Afghanistan, participated in the workshop.

On the last day of workshop, the participants visited the New Khanki Barrage Project in Wazirabad to inspect the implementation of environmental safeguard practices. Project Management Office Punjab Barrages officials, representatives of consultants and the contractor welcomed the team at the project site. SMEC team leader Azam Chaudhry briefed the team about the New Khanki Barrage Project. He said the barrage was being constructed to replace the 123-year-old Khanki Headworks. He said construction activities, started in July 2013, would be completed by 2017. PMO Barrage Environment Deputy Director Pervaiz Arif highlighted the environmental issues faced at the project site. Descon Manager Anees Sheikh led the delegation to the barrage site.
