KARACHI: Second death caused by Naegleria Fowleri has been reported in Karachi in just one week, taking the death toll by brain-eating amoeba to 12 in Sindh province since April this year. According to Dr Syed Zafar Mehdi, the focal person of the Naegleria Control Committee, a 25-year-old man from Mauripur Road died Wednesday in a private hospital during treatment. It is pertinent to mention here that two young persons, including a girl, have died this week due to the deadly virus. “It is the ninth death in the city,” Dr Mehdi said, confirming the death caused by the brain-eating amoeba. He also said that most of the city’s areas are not being supplied chlorinated water by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board. He said that top officials have been informed about the alarming situation in the city for the last couple of months but all in vain.
