PESHAWAR:

The Ehtesab Commission on Thursday arrested social welfare department’s former additional secretary for alleged involvement in corruption.

Noorullah was produced before the court of judge Hayat Ali Shah for physical custody. Senior prosecutor Lajbar Khan informed the court Noorullah misused powers vested in him as the additional secretary. Lajbar said Noorullah embezzled millions of rupees in contracts of sewing machines and other equipment for schools and colleges in the province.

Lajbar said the commission conducted an enquiry before arresting him. He requested  14-day custody of Noorullah, so he could be interrogated further. After hearing the arguments, the court granted five days custody to the commission and handed him over.

Earlier, on Tuesday, a local accountability court remanded the department’s former budget and accounts assistant director Afsar Khan, Lakki Marwat social welfare officer Insafur Rehman, former administration assistant director Nisar Muhammad and  contractor Muhammad Wali in a similar case. With help from Wali, the officials allegedly faked purchases of sewing machines and other machinery by granting contracts to ghost companies. This caused losses worth Rs20 million to the government exchequer.
