The luxury fashion house Hermès has responded to Jane Birkin's request to rename Birkin after she expressed her concerns over the cruel treatment of crocodiles for the production of their famous bag.

According to VogueHermès denied all the allegations of the farms -- exposed in an undercover video by PETA-- belonging to them or the crocodile skin from these farms being used in the production of their bags.

"Jane Birkin has expressed her concerns regarding practices for slaughtering crocodiles. Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for many years," said a statement from the brand.

"Hermès respects and shares her emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast. An investigation is underway at the Texas farm which was implicated in the video. Any breach of rules will be rectified and sanctioned," the statement said.

Hermès said that it "imposes on its partners the highest standards in the ethical treatment of crocodiles," adding that it has been organising monthly visits to its suppliers for more than 10 years.

Earlier, in a statement released to AFP, Birkin had said, "Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name, I have asked the Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag."
