PESHAWAR:

A workshop aimed at training nurses in post-treatment care and rehabilitation of heart patients commenced at Hayatabad Medical Complex on Wednesday.

The two-day event is the first of its kind in the country where in-service medics, undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate health care providers will simultaneously be trained by health experts that have specialised in cardiomyopathy, a disorder affecting the heart muscle. Nurses from different hospitals of the provincial capital attended the programme on its first day. Heart specialists underscored the different aspects of post-surgery care. They said following the culmination of treatment, patients require care and attention that cannot be provided within the confines of their homes.

Different cardiovascular disorders and diseases were also discussed and their treatment and patient handling methods were categorised.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Shah Sawar said nurses play a pivotal role in the rehabilitation of patients. He said appropriate care will ensure patients do not develop post-treatment complications. “Unfortunately most of the nurses are not well-trained and their level of understanding is minimal,” he said, adding understanding the disease is essential for understanding the state of the patient.
